Just recently I was watching Oprah Winfrey’s Legends in Music, and one of the honorees was Atlanta Georgia’s own Gladys Knight. I was excited. I’ve heard her music all my life and I just love her voice. One of the songs she sang was Midnight Train to Georgia. This is one of my favorite songs. Had me thinking, “What’s 3 songs that every time you hear it makes you sing along?”
For me of course Midnight Train to Georgia. This song brings me back to my childhood. When I was growing up every summer I went to Tampa, FL to my grandparents. Being the only grandchild there I got extremely bored. But, when my mother called and sang, “We are leaving on that Midnight Night Train to Georgia,” I knew it was time to be reunited with her and my friends in a few days.
Another song is Peaces of Me, by Ledisi. This song came out when I was searching for my place in this world. I just wanted to find myself. Then one day I’m listening to the radio and this song comes on. With lyrics like this:
So many colors
(I make up the woman that ya see)
A good friend and lover
(Anything you want Yes I can be)
I can run the business and make time for fantasy
(These are the pieces of me)
It let me know you don’t have to be perfect. Sure I’m complicated because I’m a women.
Lastly Beyoncé’s, Love on Top. Because sometimes I just want to do nothing but dance. So, on those days life is getting the best of me, I play this song on repeat and just dance. In my mind I dance just like Beyonce in the video.
